06 Aug Whatsapp the B2C sharer
Founded in 2009 by Brian Acton & Jan Koum former employees of Yahoo, Whatsapp embedded itself into the iStore’s app store which was fast growing for iPhones.
A ‘free’ service that allowed users to download a simply app and add their contacts so that they could send free SMS. I have always considered it a kind of MSN messenger concept but via mobile. After realising the demand and requiring funds for future development, Whatsapp Inc decided to charge users a very small subscription. Soon the app developed to allow for photos to be downloaded, this was then followed by voice-clips and videos.
Whatsapp Growth
In 2013 Whatsapp announced it had 400 million active users & in 2014 Facebook acquired the app in a $19 billion deal. As well as the acquisition, the app was reporting 700 million photo downloads per day and 100 million videos per day. That is a lot of sharing in a hidden environment.
As Whatsapp becomes an integral part of mobile communication, it is no surprise that mobile websites are displaying Whatsapp share buttons that can copy hyperlinks and embed in communication threads.
As mobile marketing grows and becomes more powerful in western culture, marketers and business owners should be ensuring their websites are displaying the Whatsapp icon, allowing users to browse websites and share blogs, product information, videos and other useful information into their database of peers.
I particularly like this way of marketing as it is a straight transaction, that isn’t as public as on platforms such as LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter
– but it gets the information directly to the decision maker. I know I have been recently sharing information on Whatsapp to my private groups on my smartphone and find it quick and easy on my mobile. For example tickets to events and blogs about a certain topic that I know my friends will be interested in.
So get those share buttons onto your websites now, you don’t want to lose out on yet another communication. For information on how to get this added then feel free to contact us and we will ensure you are ahead of the game.
